Croatian manufacturer of electric installations and equipment Končar decided to develop its own wind-turbine and build a big wind-farm power plant in Pometeno Brdo, in Dalmatia, for future reference for possible export deals.

The company estimates that the rising interest and growth of global investment in wind-farms could turn the wind-powered turbines the new export trump card for Končar.

Last year, a total of 25 billion EUR were invested to install 20,000 MW in new facilities, raising the total global capacities to 94,112 MW. Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of the World Wind Energy Association, says that the growth rates greatly exceeded their most optimistic projections.

Končar, fully confident in its know-how and abilities, decided to create its own references to open the doors to international markets. The company intends to operate the Pometeno Brdo power plant for as long as it takes to build up references and conduct necessary tests, and then sell it.

»Projections show that global investments in wind power plants may rise to 80 billion EUR annually, by the year 2020«, says Stjepan Car, Chairman of the Board of Končar`s Electrical Engineering Institute. EU wants to increase the share of renewable energy in total production of electricity to 20 percent, 12 percent of which will fall on wind-power.

According to Car, the installation of a single Megawatt of wind-turbine facilities opens about 20 new jobs per year. He adds that EU supports development of renewable sources of energy, realising their importance for the economy.
