Election Results Clear Sign of Support for European Integrations in Serbia

Javier Solana, The EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Ollie Rehn, European Enlargement Commissioner, greeted the peaceful and free Parliamentary Elections in Serbia of May 11, 2008.

-I would like to congratulate the people of Serbia on the free and peaceful Parliamentary Elections held yesterday. I hope that the new government will be established soon to take decisive actions on the reform processes and fulfil the requirements that would allow for further progress towards Europe, said Solana and added that such a Government could count on full support by the European Union.

In his statement after the announcement of preliminary results, Commissioner Rehn greeted the success of reformist forces that share the European values and expressed his conviction that the new Government will be established without much delay.

- I believe that the new Government will continue the reforms and the country`s progress towards EU. Serbia can be the engine of the Western Balkans and the EU is prepared to accelerate its progress and the gaining of status of candidate, said Rehn.

The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) also commended the pro-European vote.

- The results are a clear sign that the citizesn support the idea of European integrations for Serbia. ISC will continue to support the citizens of Serbia and the civil society organization that promote that idea in their efforts to secure the country its future in the European family of nations, says ISC in a public statement.
