Roma Education Centre Opens in Mursko Središce

Yesterday, June 4, 2008, the Roma Education and Information Centre in Mursko Središće opened, a part of the project of the same name implemented by the Autonomous Centre ACT and its partners, the Međimurje County, the City of Mursko Središće and local community of Sitnica.

The bulk of the finances were secured by the National Foundation for Civil Society Development, under its Together for Improvement – Community Development Projects.

The project aims at inclusion of young and grown Roma of the County of Medjimurje into the life-long learning processes, increasing their employment rates and inclusion in decision-making processes.

The long term project goal is for education activities and initiatives to originate with the Roma themselves. The opening of this Centre has secured the opportunity to create Roma initiatives and associations, implementation of necessary education programmes, cultural and other activities.

ATC will train, by the coming Autumn, trainers in other Roma settlements to enable them to implement trainings in their own communities. By the end of the year, the Centre will start equipping its own library and publish its own magazine/bulletin.

In addition to the Roma of Sitnica, Mursko Središće gets a fully equipped facility to organized training for other citizens, depending on their needs, with special emphasis on the unemployed.
