Zelena Akcija: Energy Lobby Revives the Idea for Nuclear Plant in Croatia
|
The Zelena akcija (Green Action) environmental associations comments that the Government of Croatia is increasingly inclined to support the estimates of Croatian Power Company HEP and the energy lobby that Croatia needs to build a nuclear power station, at a moment when we learn that global uranium reserves will suffice for another hundred years or so.
`The public has clearly presented its negative views on nuclear facilities Also, the state leadership seems to have missed the EU set goals to reach the share of renewable sources in total production of electricity by 20% by 2020. We, on the other hand, renew the idea to build a nuclear power station`, says Tomislav Tomašević, Zelena Akcija President, after the announcement by Prime Minister Sanader that nuclear power stations shall not be considered taboo anymore, after the latest wave of growing prices of energy. Tomašević believes that the Government uses the latest turmoil on the oil market and the resulting hysteria, with authorities trying to make an impression that they actually do something through projects like nuclear power stations and Družba Adria, already renounced by the public. On the other hand, adds Zelena Akcija, renewable energy projects wait for 15 years to be implemented and for the state to support them, to no avail. `As far as Družba Adrija is concerned, we should just note that we had a chance to see the capacities of our authorities to react to crisis situations in the Adriatic, and we wonder what might happen once the super-tankers start cruising its waters`, says Tomašević, who advocates better education about benefits of energy efficiency. |
