Potocari Memorial Passes without Incidents

Over 20,000 people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad gathered on July 11 in Potočari, at the commemoration to mark the 13th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, when over 8,000 male citizens of all ages were executed after the fall of this town in Eastern Bosnia.

`Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the whole world in general, stops to honour the victims of genocide and to think over the evil and crimes committed here while the rest of Europe lived in peace`, said Haris Silajdžić, Member of Bosnian Presidency in his address.

Silajdžić expressed the graditude to foreign governments and nongovernmental organizations from around the world for their help and selfless efforts to revive the life in Srebrenica and other places with similar fate in BiH, but also on their efforts to secure justice for the families of genocide victims.

Before the start of the commemoration, the participants of the Peace March arrived in Srebrenica. Some 3,000 people walked the road from Nezuk to Potočari, to mark the superhuman efforts of Srebrenica survivors who took on foot to reach the territory controlled by the Government in Sarajevo. During their march through the dense forests, many of their relatives and friends perished.

Among them were also twelve soldiers from the Dutch battalion charged with the task the protect the UN Protected Area in Srebrenica, but couldn`t, or woudn`t do more.

The Anniversary was also marked in Belgrade, where the Women in Black organized a peace action with screening of a video by Milica Tomić Women of Srebrenica Speak, on Belgrade`s Republic Square.

The video covers the topic of dialogue of women related to the victims of Srebrenica with Serbian institutions, the heirs of the regime they hold responsible, but also with citizens of Serbia in whose name was the genocide committed.

The two chief suspects for the crimes in Srebrenica, Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, are still at large and are yet to face their charges in front of the Hague Tribunal.
