Zagreb Queer Festival Opens

The 6th Queer Zagreb Festival opened last night at the Europa Cinema in Zagreb, in the presence of numerous guest from Croatia and abroad.

The Festival was officially opened by Peter Tatchell, one of the best-known LGBTIQ human rights activists in the UK and the world. In his opening address, Tatchell expressed he was sorry that he wasn`t able to participate in previous editions of the Festival, but that he was happy he could finally make it to this sixth ZQF.

Tatchell also reminded the present of the deplorable events surrounding the last week`s opening of the Sarajevo Queer Festival and expressed his solidarity with all `brothers and sisters in BiH`, for which he received a huge round of applause.

The XXY, the only feature film in the programme, was screened at the opening ceremony. XXY has won more than a dozen of awards in international festivals, including the Critic`s Week Grand Prize in Cannesu 2007. The other films in the programme are documentaries on the topics of crime, sexuality and gender.

Peter Tatchell will hold a workshop on activist methods and future of gay movement. (For detailed programme of events, visit the internet website of the festival at queerzagreb.org.

Queer Zagreb is an international festival which is challenging normativity in the Balkans by producing local and international arts, activism and theory. This year, the festival is dedicated to the topics of crime, sexuality and gender.

Over the past five years, the Festival has received more than 150 artists from more than 30 countries, making it one of the biggest festivals of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe.
