UNKT Awards Journalists` Action to Eradicate Poverty in Kosovo

On Friday, 24 October 2008, in the National Museum of Kosovo in Pristina, on the occasion of the United Nations Day the UN Coordinator Frode Mauring announced the 6 winners of the Journalism Poverty Prize 2008, closing the activities dedicated to Poverty Eradication Week.

Following a call for application launched jointly by the UNKT and the Association of Profesional Jurnalists of Kosovo (APJK) on World Press Freedom Day, May 3rd 2008, the UNKT received 41 journalism poverty centered pieces across Kosovo, in all categories TV report (1 for majority and 1 for media reporting on minorities), radio report (1 for majority and 1 for media reporting on minorities), written report/feature story and photo.

To evaluate the jurnalists application a professional panel of 5 UN Communication and 2 independent proffesionals have evaluated all applications and selected 2 journalism pieces, for each of the categories which were presented to United Nations Development Coordinator (UNDC), Mr. Frode Mauring who made the final say about selection of 6 best poverty covered stories/features -- winners.

\\\"This traditional prize,sponsored by the UNKT serves to award the people, who make use of their unalienable rights to address in creative ways, using pen and paper, voices and cameras to bring to light issues of poverty in Kosovo. Media can play a crucial role to generate solutions to eradicate poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Journalists can be the strongest advocates to improving the livelihoods of people in Kosovo\\\", Mauring said in his address.

The Journalism Poverty Prize 2008 went to Majlinda Aliu, RTK, for best TV report; Budimir Nicić, VOA Kosovo, for Best TV Report of media reporting on minorities; Fidan Rama and Ermal Panduri, Radio Dukagjini, for best radio report; Marijana Simić, Radio Kim, for best radio report of media reporting on minorities; Serbeze Haxhija, Lajm daily, for best article in print media; and Agim Uka, Lajm daily, for best poverty related photo.
