SUMMER HARVEST Campaign Completed
In the period from August 10 to September 16, SFOR and the local police forces conducted the “Summer Harvest” action for collection of illegal arms, on the territory of municipalities Prijedor, Banja Luka, Novi Grad, Kostajnica, Sanski Most, Kozarska Dubica, Knezevo and Kotor Varos.
Over 500 pieces of firearms and artillery of all calibers, together with huge amounts of different ordnance and ammunition, were collected in the campaign.
The “Summer Harvest” is a part of the greater campaign “Harvest”, which is continuously implemented on the territory of the Republic of Srpska since 1999.
In Prijedor Municipality the action is conducted by the Department of Civilian Protection and the local Police Department. Over the past five years, over 1,000 pieces of assault weapons were seized, 86 pieces of artillery, together with large quantities of ammunition and explosives.
In 2004, the Department of Civilian Protection received reports on more than 70 secret weapons caches. Some weapons were found discarded in the fields, in the local rivers, and some was owned by the citizens who wished to give away their arms to the authorities.
The “Harvest” campaign for collection of illegal arms will continue in the future. The citizens have the opportunity to bring their illegal firearms to the authorities. Criminal charges will be brought against all citizens who fail to report their illegal arms to the authorities.
