28 Victims of Land-mines in B&H This Year
According to the statistics available to the UNHCR, 28 persons suffered injuries in incidents involving land-mines and unexploded ammunition and ordnance. In 35 percent of those incidents, the resulting injuries were fatal for the victims.
Four incidents were registered in August. The largest number of incidents were registered in May and July, with six victims each.
The great majority of all victims fall in the 19-60 years of age (23 cases this year), followed by the children with three separate incidents. The local population of the areas with minefields left over from the war is most vulnerable, as are the refugees and IDPs.
Since 1996, there were 1,506 victims of landmines and other leftover ammunition. 34 percent of all incidents ended in fatalities. Over that period of time, 319 children suffered injuries or were killed.
