MOST Warns of Serious Violations of the Referendum Procedures
|
The Civic Association MOST, under its referendum monitoring activities, concludes that there are possibilities for serious violations of procedure in the forthcoming referendum. The conclusions were reached based on the reports of activists and regional offices of the association, and were voiced with the goal to provide fair and democratic balloting process for all citizens of Macedonia.
MOST warns that some ballot stations in the Kumanovo, Struga and Kicevo regions may not be opened on the day of the Referendum, which would deny the citizens’ voting rights in a most serious manner. Also, according to the regional coordinators and reports that citizens filed on the open phone-line 080 080 080, MOST learns that some local election boards in the regions of Kumanovo, Struga and Kicevo, will not accept the electoral materials at all. MOST is concerned over the fact that leaders of some institutions speak for those institutions, taking positions pro or against the referendum, thus turning the scope of the referendum from the dissatisfaction of the citizens with the new Law on Territorial Organization of Macedonia into a plebiscite for confidence in the Government. There are also cases of intimidation and pressure on the employees in the public administration, as well as involvement of religious communities in the political campaign, which impedes on the democratic and constitutional right of the citizens to make their own decisions on this issue, without external pressure and influence. |
