For the first time in the history of the organization, high UN representatives celebrated October 24, the United Nations Day in Podgorica. Miodrag Vlahovic, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said to the press that it was “nice to see the Montenegro and UN flags together”.

Vlahovic and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic met the UN delegation led by the new Permanent Coordinator for Serbia and Montenegro and UNDP representative Nicola Harrington. Vlahovic said, at the reception in the honour of UN Day, that Montenegro is close to becoming a full-fledged member of the world organization. “That is where Montenegro belongs... It is our sincere long-term aim,” he said.

Djukanovic and Harrington expressed their support for the new strategic approach adopted by the UN and the replacement of its interests from solving short-term humanitarian problems with long-term development goals. In that regard, they greeted the orientation of the Montenegro Government and other institutions towards the implementation of the development goals resulting from the “Millennium Declaration”, a fact well recognized by the New York UN Headquarters.

It was emphasized that the UN should provide the necessary assistance and play a coordinative role in terms of the other international bodies and organizations, regarding the Montenegro integrations in the European and Euro-Atlantic structures. Government representatives also estimated the cooperation with the specialized UN bodies and agencies in Montenegro as very successful and useful.

The cooperation was especially good in the formulation of the documents on the long-term programmes of UN institutions in the fields of reform of public administration, rule of Law, equal and balanced economic development.

Nicole Harrington said for the media that she didn’t discuss the construction of the “Buk Bijela” Dam and the consequences it may have on the canyon of Tara River, protected by the UN conventions. Vlahovic didn’t comment on the issue of “Buk Bijela” construction.
