Alternative Dialogue Kosovo-Serbia

The goal of this exchange programme, supported by the United States Institute for Peace, is to establish communication between the youth from Kosovo and Serbia. The process of getting to know each other, the war stories, exchange of experience and learning should help the youth to break the circle of hatred and build a better future for the region.

The programme was first conceptualized at the “Violent Societies in Transition” gathering, organized in Risan, Montenegro, in June 2004, by the Youth Initiative, in cooperation with the Heinrich Boll Foundation. The Youth Initiative for Human Rights beleves that the direct communication between the young people is the best way to overcome the prejudices, misunderstandings and eventual future conflicts.

In order to participate, one should have a wish to visit Kosovo or Serbia, respectively, and to fill in the Application forms attached to this article. If you are from Kosovo, send the completed form to fitore@yi.org.yu, and if you are from Serbia, send it to edin@yi.org.yu.

Within 15 days, your application will be answered. If chosen to participate in the programme, the organizers will cover all costs of your stay in Kosovo or Serbia, including the transportation costs. They will also assist in the preparation of the agenda of the visit. The participants will have an obligation to write a short essay (not more than 2,000 words) on his/her experiences.

The first deadline for application is December 15, 2004, while the second and third will be set for January 30, 2005 and March 10, 2005, respectively. The visits will be organized from January to May 2005, divided into two phases of the programme. The priority will be given to students, NGO activists, members of political parties’ youth organizations, with special attention for those applicants that have never visited Kosovo or Serbia.

The programme is implemented by the Offices of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Pristina and Belgrade.
