Nothing About Us Without Us

Under the “Nothing About Us Without Us” motto, the International Day of the Disabled Persons is celebrated today. All over the world, forums, debates and campaigns will take place at 13:00 hours. The central event will take place in New York, at the UN building. This year, under the recommendation of the UN Committee for Human Rights, the emphasis will be given to the promotion and understanding for political, social, economic and cultural aspects of life of disabled persons around the world.

On the occasion of the International Day of the Disabled Persons, the awards will be given to NGOs, schools, social work centres and other organizations that are involved in professional services to the disabled in SEE, for best results in the work with disabled persons. The award is given by Handicap International South East Europe.

The single candidate for the award from B&H is the Association of Paraplegics and People with Child Paralysis from Zenica. By November 2004, the Association achieved significant results: they translated and published the ‘Yes, you can do it” book, dedicated to persons with injured spinal cord; organized numerous sports and recreation events; assisted the members of the association with donated equipment; participated in the preparation of the legislation for protection of disabled persons rights.

The day will not be celebrated on municipal, entity or state level. Only the associations of the disabled will join the activities to celebrate the International Day of the Disabled Persons. This fact is, probably, illustrative of the position of disabled persons in Bosnian society.

A greater attention by the Government institutions may be expected next year, with the entry into force of the Law on Changes and Amendments of the Law on Basic Social Security, Protection of Civilian Victims of War, and Protection of Family and Children. The Law was passed this year, after a six-years of the “Help Us Today, Tomorrow you May Held Yourselves” campaign.
